Third Labor – Contemporary Wildlife Painting

Third Labor captures the charged quiet of a young fawn pausing within a glowing woodland. M. S. Miller builds the scene with watercolor paint, watercolor pencil, and gouache on Arches Aquarelle watercolor paper, allowing transparent passages of color to meet richer, more opaque highlights.

A shaft of yellow-green forest light settles across the animal while blue-violet shadows deepen the surrounding woods. Red-orange notes within the fawn bring warmth to the composition and create a vivid focal point against the layered greens. Baroque-inspired backlighting gives the scene a sense of drama, but the feeling remains intimate rather than theatrical: a brief encounter between viewer, animal, and landscape.

The work was inspired by the Ceryneian Hind from the myth of Heracles’ third labor. Instead of centering the legendary pursuit, Miller reframes the story as a quiet moment of vulnerability, endurance, and wonder. The result is contemporary wildlife art with both narrative depth and an immediate connection to the natural world.

Undamaged artwork may be returned within 14 days of delivery after requesting a return. A 25% restocking fee applies, return shipping is the buyer's responsibility, and the work must be returned in its original condition and packaging.
