Styx transforms a descending waterfall into something more than a landscape. Inspired by the primordial Greek river and goddess associated with sacred oaths, M. S. Miller approaches the scene as a place of encounter—a threshold shaped by water, stone, light, and the suggestion of forces beyond what can be seen.
Created in watercolor paint, watercolor pencil, and gouache on Arches Aquarelle watercolor paper, the composition combines atmospheric washes with more defined passages of rock and moving water. Smoky charcoal and blue-gray tones create depth through the upper section, while rust, terracotta, moss, olive, and cream bring warmth and physical presence to the foreground.
The vertical flow gives the work a strong sense of movement, but its mood remains contemplative rather than restless. The result is a contemporary realism piece that explores transcendence, endurance, sacred obligation, and the unseen forces that shape human experience.
For collectors, the 24 × 16 3/4 original offers the material variation and surface character of Miller's hand-worked watercolor, pencil, and gouache technique.
For buyers needing another scale, Styx is also offered as a limited edition of 100 giclée prints in four sizes. Limited-edition prints receive a professionally issued certificate of authenticity in keeping with 13Lemons' published gallery practice.
Its mineral palette makes Styx especially effective in contemporary, modern-organic, Southwestern, transitional, and earth-toned interiors. It can hold its own as a focused statement piece while remaining subtle enough for a living room, office, study, bedroom, or thoughtfully layered gallery wall.
