Daphne – Contemporary Symbolism by M.S. Miller

Daphne is a contemporary symbolic work by M.S. Miller that brings an ancient story of transformation into a deeply personal present.

Created in oil pastel, watercolor pencil and gold leaf on acid-free black mixed-media paper, the composition places a human figure within a dense network of branches, leaves and expressive marks. Crimson reds and deep burgundy move across the surface against cobalt blue and black, while gold leaf catches the light throughout the branches and foliage.

The work draws from the Greek myth of Daphne and Apollo. In the story, Daphne transforms into a tree while fleeing Apollo. Miller uses that moment of transformation not simply as mythological subject matter, but as a symbolic language for survival.

Miller avoids a literal retelling. The figure seems to emerge from and merge with the surrounding branches, while the vigorous oil pastel marks keep the entire image active. Gold leaf introduces moments of light and visual interruption against the dark ground, creating a work that shifts between beauty, tension and resilience.
